How Do We Make Diamonds from Ashes?
1. Ashes and Hair Refinement Process
Carbon Extraction
Turning ashes or hair into cremation diamonds begins with a meticulous chemical analysis of the carbon content. This analysis ascertains the most effective purification method. Special solvents are employed to dissolve extraneous elements. The material is then desiccated in a vacuum furnace to ensure optimal purity. Depending on the desired color of the cremation diamond, different refinement processes are applied. For instance, traces of nitrogen or boron can produce yellow or blue tints, respectively. When ashes are thoroughly purified to an impressive 99.99% carbon content, the outcome is a colorless memorial diamond, radiating an unparalleled aura of purity.
The carbon content in everyone’s hair or ashes is different, so the results are unique for each.
2. HPHT Growth Process
Natural diamonds are formed underground when the element carbon is subjected to both extreme amounts of pressure and excessively high temperatures. A High Pressure, High Temperature (HPHT) press is used to artificially simulate the natural environment in which carbon is transformed into a diamond. In this case, the carbon from ashes is transformed into a beautiful cremation diamond.
To create the cremation diamond, a tiny diamond seed is prepared and placed at the bottom of the press’ inner core cube. The interior of the press is heated to over 2000°F, melting a catalyst metal. The molten catalyst metal dissolves the high-purity, personal carbon source, which is then transported to the small diamond seed and crystalized. A cremation diamond is born and starts to grow like a shining star.
Diamond Crystallization
3. Diamond Polishing Process
Once a cremation diamond is created, it is raw and uncut, showing none of its true beauty and splendor, yet. To coax out its true potential, our expert artisans polish the cremation diamonds. First, the cremation diamond undergoes “crosswork,” in which the main facets are placed on the diamond. This ensures maximum weight, clarity, and the best angles for the specific diamond shape. Next, the diamond’s main facets are smoothed, also known as polishing. Last, the final facets are polished onto the diamond. The facets added are the stars, top and bottom halves also known as upper and lower girdle facets. This process has largely stayed the same for hundreds of years. However, our artisans use the latest tools to ensure precision work.

“I want to have my pet’s ashes made into a cremation diamond and have it mounted onto a pendant and surprise my wife with it. She is still grieving over his passing. The present would be of great help I hope. I changed my mind and redid the order form several times, but the CS staff have been really accommodating. I’m pretty satisfied with the order process. The diamond looks perfect.”
— Victoria Emsalem

Ash Diamond 4C’s
Here we explain the “4Cs” standard – color, cut, clarity, and carat weight – which are the most important principles to consider when ordering a diamond.
In 1953 the 4Cs became the international standard for diamond grading. As created by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the diamond standard was established as a universal system for grading a diamond’s quality and its value, helping customers compare diamonds of different prices.
Memorial cremation diamonds are genuine diamonds. They can also be graded by GIA under the authentic 4Cs standards. Nevertheless, there is still more to learn about what’s special about making diamonds out of cremation ashes and the 4Cs.
Ash Diamond 4C’s - Color
The natural color of memorial cremation diamonds is yellow. This is due to the presence of other elements such as nitrogen inside the human body and occurs in any process making diamonds out of cremation ashes.
A natural yellow diamond can be priced at 3 to 5 times that of a colorless diamond. Conversely, a colorless memorial diamond is more costly than a yellow memorial diamond because it takes a lot of additional work purifying and removing elements such as nitrogen or boron.
Because it is affected by the individual elements inside each ordered diamond, the color of every EverDear diamond is unique. When making diamonds out of cremation ashes, these colors fall mostly between “Fancy Light” and “Fancy Vivid”.
EverDear does not add any additional elements during the production process, which makes your diamonds more natural and completely unique.
Ash Diamond 4C’s - Clarity
Clarity measures the tiny inclusions found in diamonds, such as carbon needles, clouds, pinpoints, and knots.
When making diamonds out of cremation ashes and hair, natural substances and elements may also exist in the final cremation diamond.
Most EverDear memorial diamonds are “VS” or “VVS” grade (Very, Very Slightly Included). This means no internal inclusions can be seen without the help of a magnification lens. When turning ashes into memorial diamonds of larger sizes, these may have slightly more inclusions than the standard sizes.
Ash Diamond 4C’s - Cut
The cut of a diamond determines its brilliance and sparkle.
The “round brilliant” cut with 58 facets is the most dazzling shape among all diamond cuts. This cut also retains a maximum size of the memorial diamond.
That’s why the round brilliant cut is recommended by our experts as the final cut when making cremation diamonds out of ashes.
Ash Diamond 4C’s - Carat Size
Diamond size is measured in carat. One carat is further divided into 100 points.
As size increases, the price of a diamond increases sharply. A 1 carat diamond has 3 to 5 times the value of a half-carat diamond in today’s market.
Different from on-stock mined diamonds, the exact size of a memorial diamond cannot be pre-determined. The given creation time frame dictates a size range, but the final size may vary individually. This is the reason, when we turn ashes into cremation diamonds, we price them according to carat range rather than exact size.
